INNOVATION: Creativity and Big Ideas

In a time of disruptive technology and unprecedented change, the world is in need of creative leaders with big ideas.

While encouraging innovation on all fronts, we are particularly focused on exploring new educational approaches, opportunities and audiences for the arts, and cultivating artists who think creatively and boldly.

We offer

“Big Idea” classes
All Spark classes explore innovative and creative solutions. We are in the process of redesigning a freshman level course, required for all music students, built around a big idea for the university.

“Big Idea” events
Examples include WagnerWorldWide 2013, Week of Remembrance: A Celebration of Jewish Culture in the Midlands, CMS 21st Century Music School Summit, and SAVVY Arts Venture Challenge.

Faculty Lead Team
A team was convened in spring 2013 to imagine innovative solutions for a 21st-century music school education.

Faculty retreat
Music faculty member retreats focus on big ideas for the music school.

Library collection
The Spark Library Collection features numerous titles related to creativity, leadership and big ideas.

Our office, called SparkLab, is a beautiful space unlike any other at USC. It’s unique design and layout inspire creativity, collaboration and big ideas.

In addition, we advocate a number of initiatives that encourage greater levels of creativity and big ideas throughout the School of Music. Stay tuned for more details.
