Playing and Teaching the Viola: A Comprehensive Guide to the Central Clef Instrument and Its Music




Gregory Lynn Barnes was music director for the acclaimed Bay Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Symphony Youth Orchestra for over two decades, while Orchestra Consultant for the Norfolk Public School’s large orchestra program (some 2,000 string students). Since retirement and relocation to South Carolina, he has been the conductor of the Palmetto Youth Orchestra for Converse College, the Presbyterian College Chamber Orchestra, guest-conducted district, regional and All-State groups and is a clinician for Fiesta-Val Invitational Music Festivals. He was also the conductor of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra in Anderson, SC in 2004-2005.

Mr. Barnes earned music degrees from the College of William and Mary and East Carolina University, and also studied conducting at the Josef Haydn Conservatory in Austria and the Lausanne Conservatory in Switzerland. As a violist, he played many years with the Virginia Symphony and Opera Orchestras, and before that was a member of the Richmond and Atlanta Symphony Orchestras. He was principal viola in two touring orchestras in Italy and violist in the Dominion String Quartet and the Norfolk Chamber Consort.

A Visiting Lecturer at the University of South Carolina, Mr. Barnes teaches string techniques to wind and vocal majors and supervises pre-service string and band teachers. He writes music reviews for the Columbia Free Times and is author of Playing and Teaching the Viola – A Comprehensive Guide to the Central Clef Instrument and Its Music, published by the American String Teachers Association and available through Alfred.
