Funding is anticipated for all entering Ph.D. students. All entering students are expected to have a research or teaching assistantship which comes with a competitive stipend. In addition to the stipend, students receive a 100 percent tuition supplement and 100 percent insurance subsidy to help defray expenses. More information is available on graduate assistantships.
Anticipated Living Expenses
Costs listed below are estimates for one calendar year.
Estimate is based on one student sharing a two bedroom apartment with one other person for one calendar year.

Students may choose to purchase a prepaid meal plan to eat at university dining facilities. The full-meal plan (21 meals per week) costs $2,100 per academic year. For students living on or off campus, estimated expenses for one calendar year are $3,000.
Dependent Family Members:
For students who will be accompanied by family, the estimated costs to support these dependents for one year are approximately $2,500 for the spouse and $2,000 for each child.
Personal Expenses: $3,321
These expenses include routine medical and dental costs, clothes, laundry, transportation, recreation and personal expenses.
International Student Enrollment Fee:
International students enrolling at the University of South Carolina must pay a one-time enrollment fee of $750. This fee is usually assessed during the first semester and is automatically added to your bill.
A one-time, nonrefundable matriculation fee of $80 is assessed to all degree-seeking students.
$200 per semester ($17 per credit hour).
