The Sonoco International Business Department at the Darla Moore School of Business
is widely recognized within the field of international business. Its mission is to
develop and disseminate leading-edge knowledge concerning the practice of global business.
Preparing Graduates for the Global Marketplace
Combined with the international expertise of our functional departments, the Sonoco
International Business Department provides the Moore School with unparalleled competence
in the critical area of the conduct of business across national boundaries and diverse
cultures. The department emphasizes understanding cross-border inter- and intra-organizational
relationships comprising the modern multinational enterprise, as well as the institutional,
financial, sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts within which the multinational
enterprise is embedded. While our faculty is unified by this interest, we approach
issues from a wide variety of disciplinary bases. Building on this diversity, we are
particularly interested in understanding international business phenomena from multidisciplinary
and multilevel perspectives.
The department offers an undergraduate international business major that has been
consistently ranked as No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report. The department also offers
a highly regarded international business major at the doctoral level and contributes
extensively to the international master's and executive programs of the Moore School.
The department’s commitment to excellence in the classroom is evidenced by the faculty’s
numerous outstanding teacher awards at all levels.
The department has been ranked as one of the most prolific international business
research departments. Department members played a lead role in the Moore School’s
becoming one of the five original recipients of a major grant awarded by the U.S.
Department of Education to establish a Center for International Business Education and Research. Faculty members are extensively involved in CIBER-sponsored international programs
and research and continue to provide leadership to the center.

Research and Publications
The Sonoco International Business Department has a long, impressive list of research
and publications, many of which have been referenced in major publications.
Each year, we invite noted scholars to present current research to faculty and students. This
exposes our community not only to new ideas, but also to other methods of approach.

Hodges Forum on International Affairs
H.E Mohamed Moncef Marzouki, the first democratically elected president of Tunisia
after the January 14th Revolution in 2011, shared his experiences and offered his
insight on the future of democracy in the region.
March 21, 2017 Hodges Forum on International Fairs
Bill Browder, the Founder and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, shared his experience of being declared
a “threat to national security” as a result of his battle against corporate corruption
in Russia; and the fight for justice for his lawyer which led to the US Congress adopting
the “Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act” in 2012.
