Bio

Background: Dr. Blenda joined Department of Biomedical Sciences at USC School of Medicine Greenville in 2017. She earned a BS/MS degree (Specialist Diploma) with honors (summa cum laude) in biology and English (minor in German) from the Melitopol State Pedagogical University (Melitopol, Ukraine), a PhD in biotechnology from the Institute of Agroecology and Biotechnology (Kiev, Ukraine), and a PhD in genetics from Clemson University. Immediately following completion of her second PhD in 2003, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Clemson University Genomics Institute for four years and then a research assistant professor in the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry at Clemson University. During that period she worked on multidisciplinary team research projects developing physical maps and databases of several genomes. Dr. Blenda’s next appointments were as an assistant professor and then as an associate professor at Erskine College, where she taught genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and medical biotechnology, as well as conducted genetic and genomic research. In 2012, together with the founding faculty she participated in the development and teaching of the first Molecular and Cellular Foundations of Medicine module at the USC School of Medicine Greenville. In 2015-2016 Dr. Blenda spent nine months on a research sabbatical as a visiting associate professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, in the laboratory of Dr. Sean Stowell. This sabbatical served as a launching pad for several of her current projects, including investigation of antimicrobial properties of the human galectin proteins, as well as their potential as biomarkers of disease.
Teaching Interest(s): Molecular and cell biology, biomarkers of human disease, medical genetics and genomics, glycobiology, translational research.
Research Interest(s): Current Research projects 1. Assessment of multiple biomarkers for the non-invasive and accurate diagnosis of endometriosis; collaboration with Bruce Lessey, MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Wake Forest SOM, Winston-Salem, NC. 2. Investigation of the antimicrobial properties of the human galectin protein as alternative antibiotics (dose-response bacteria killing assays, galectin-bacteria binding assays via flow cytometry, glycan array data analysis); collaboration with Sean Stowell, MD, PhD, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Emory University SOM, Atlanta, GA. 3. Genetic study of split hand foot malformation (SFHM); collaboration with Charles Schwartz, PhD, Director of Molecular Studies and Senior Research Scientist, Greenwood Genetic Center, Greenwood, SC.
