Guillaume D. Dumont, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of hip, shoulder, and knee injuries. He is a faculty member in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. His clinical interests include sports medicine; hip conditions including femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), labral injuries, snapping hip, and arthroscopic hip surgery; shoulder instability, dislocations, labrum/rotator cuff injuries, and shoulder arthritis; and knee conditions including ligament, meniscus, and cartilage injuries.
Dr. Dumont is one of few surgeons in the region with subspecialty training in hip arthroscopy and the treatment of non–arthritic hip injuries. After his sports medicine fellowship, he sought additional expertise in hip arthroscopy / hip preservation in Nashville, TN with Dr. J.W. Thomas Byrd, a pioneer in the field. He is interested in the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears, and other conditions affecting the young adult hip.
Dr. Dumont also travelled to the Alps Surgery Institute in Annecy, France, for a fellowship with Dr. Laurent Lafosse, a world leader and innovator in arthroscopic shoulder surgery. There, he learned cutting edge techniques in minimally invasive arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The shoulder has served as the basis for Dr. Dumont’s passion for arthroscopic surgery. He enjoys restoring patient function with advanced arthroscopic procedures for treating shoulder instability, labral injuries, and rotator cuff injuries.
Dr. Dumont is a native of Montreal, Canada. He earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry at the University of Tennessee, where he played football, before attending medical school at Emory University in Atlanta. He then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. During his final year of residency, he was selected as Chief Resident and was awarded the W. Brandon Carrell Distinguished Physician Award for outstanding patient care. He then completed a fellowship in sports medicine & shoulder surgery at Harvard Medical School / Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he helped care for athletes of all levels including the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins. Dr. Dumont then completed additional training in hip arthroscopy with J.W. Thomas Byrd at the Nashville Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Tennessee.
He is actively involved in clinical research, focusing his efforts on the investigation of injuries and treatments of the shoulder, knee and hip. He has presented research at local and national orthopedic meetings and authored several publications in orthopedic literature. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).
Dr. Dumont strives to deliver outstanding care to individuals of all athletic and activity levels. His goal is to help his patients overcome their orthopedic injuries to return to their desired activities and lifestyles.
