Truth: One of the best ways to put learning into practice is by getting work experience in your area of study.
But there's another great way to take what you're reading about in class and apply it to the real world around you — one that is often overlooked. Research!
Countless Adventures, Endless Possibilities
Ask any researcher and they will tell you that one of the biggest perks of conducting research is that they get to do what they love doing... and get paid to do it, while also helping others find success.
In the College of HRSM, our faculty researchers and students alike are identifying solutions that allow families to have happier travel and entertainment experiences. They are working with local business owners to increase margins and retain employees. They are making business processes more efficient by applying technology.
And you don't have to assist with some of the amazing research that someone else is conducting. In fact, you are encouraged to create your own research opportunity, with a faculty mentor at your side, while you craft your own research internship. Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible.
Become a Magellan Scholar
Did you know that you can earn up to $3,000 of funding for an undergraduate research project?
The Magellan Scholar program was established in 2005 to enrich the academic experience of UofSC's undergraduates with research opportunities in all disciplines from science, technology and medicine, to theatre, music and art. Through the faculty mentoring relationship and professional research experience, students creatively explore their interests at a more in-depth level than can be attained in the classroom. Research gives students a competitive edge in the job market and when applying for graduate or professional schools.
More than $2.7 million has been awarded directly to over 1,000 UofSC undergraduates to undertake a vast array of mentored research experiences!
