Hotel, restaurant, tourism, retail, fashion, sport, entertainment and technology. These industries have local, national and even global economic impact. Through our centers and institutes, our research enhances the academic success of our students and the economic success of these global industries.

Defining Quality

Research is critical in defining the quality of our higher education institutions, which is why we are so proud that the University of South Carolina has received the highest designation by The Carnegie Foundation as an institution of very high research activity.

Economic Impact

The industries that our six centers and institutes support are growing, and contribute significantly, both in employment statistics and revenue dollars for communities in our state, our country and around the globe.

  • Retailing is the largest employer in the United States, second only to the US Government.
  • The travel and tourism industry is one of the few industries credited with producing positive balance of trade results for the U.S. economy.
  • How large is the economic impact of college sports? According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the total TV advertisement spending during the men's college basketball March Madness tournament amounted to just over 1 billion U.S. dollars in the 2010/11 season.
  • Tourism is now the number one industry in South Carolina.
  • 130 million people will be restaurant patrons in a single day. (Food Service Warehouse)

The Power of Partnerships

Our researchers identify critical challenges, and we find solutions. That's why our business partners find so much value in the services that we can offer. Grants and research funding are integral to industrial growth and sustainability, which is why we make every dollar count.
