  • The College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management is third among colleges at the University of South Carolina for undergraduate degrees awarded annually with 2,408 students (2,269 undergraduate and 138 graduate). The number of degrees awarded in 2014-15: 536 (Bachelor’s) and 36 (Master’s).
  • HRSM is home to 62 award-winning and world-renowned faculty along with 26 full-time staff members.
  • There are more than 20,000 alumni located across the state, region, country and world with 66% residing in South Carolina.
  • Study abroad opportunities offered include Europe, China, Thailand, Dominican Republic and many more. 
  • HRSM houses six centers for applied industry research.
  • Over 1,000 student internships are completed annually.
  • One-third of all jobs in South Carolina relate to a discipline taught at HRSM.

Department and School Achievements

Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management

The School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management’s undergraduate program has been ranked No. 9 nationally by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Education while the master’s program ranked second nationally and the Ph.D. program was tied for seventh in the country.

The historic McCutchen House, recently celebrated over 200 years of service to the famous Horseshoe, is a student-run hospitality management laboratory that hosts more than 1,000 events annually.

The school operates four research institutes/centers: the Richardson Family SmartState Center of Economic Excellence in Tourism and Economic Development, the International Tourism Research Institute, the Sloan Foundation Travel and Tourism Industry Center and the International Institute in Foodservice Research and Education.

The department is 1 of only 2 Club Management Specializations worldwide endorsed by the Club Management Association of America (CMAA).

Students secure internships with industry leaders Marriott International, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Hyatt, Hilton, Darden Restaurants, Compass Group USA and many more.


The Department of Retailing is one of the largest 4-year retailing programs in the nation. The American Collegiate Retailing Association, a professional organization composed of membership from four-year institutions that have retail programs or courses, ranked the department second in North America.

This is the only department in North America that focuses only on Retail Management and Fashion Merchandising.

All courses offered in the Department of Retailing have a foundation in the retailing industry. The focus is “business to consumer.” Examples include retail shopper analysis, retail buying and retail promotion.

100% of the students gain managerial level experience with industry leaders through their internships. Examples of companies where our students have landed include Gucci, Nordstrom, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Belk, Apple, Kleinfeld Bridal, Dolce & Gabbana and many more.

Fashion Board at USC and the Department of Retailing hosts USC Fashion Week each spring. The weeklong event includes three fashion shows and a symposium featuring the latest fashion and industry trends.

Sport and Entertainment Management

The Department of Sport and Entertainment Management features the largest undergraduate program and faculty of its kind in the country.

The SPTE program is the nation’s first department at a major university created specifically for the study of sport and entertainment with a solid business curriculum.

The 2015 SportBusiness International’s Sports Course Rankings rated the undergraduate program No. 3 in the United States and No. 5 globally.

The SPTE graduate program moved up to No. 8 nationally and No. 13 globally. The rankings were based on the program’s curriculum and student success once they graduate and enter the workforce.

The annual Sport Entertainment & Venues Tomorrow Conference (SEVT) is the largest yearly conference of its kind in the industry and is hosted annually by the department along with the annual College Sports Research Institute (CSRI) each spring.

Student internships include AEG Worldwide, Feld Entertainment, Spectra, Live Nation, NASCAR, Octagon, Monumental Sports and many more.
