South Carolina Honors College

Kelly Taylor

Ask me about…my study abroad in Japan, Pre-Law, research, and senior theses!

I am a senior here at the South Carolina Honors College. I am from Columbia, South Carolina and am majoring in International Studies with minors in criminal justice and art history. I plan to attend law school after graduation and want to practice international law.

Something I love: I am a big fan of animals of the feline variety, especially your everyday house cat. My cat is 13 years old and has been my constant companion for over half of my life and I love her more than anything.

My favorite book: Both my favorite books and movies are the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien. I love the message of friendship and hope that both versions of the story convey. I had the awesome opportunity to see the musical "Hamilton" on Broadway, so now I am satisfying my desire to learn more about the various historical figures' lives as presented in the show by reading the book Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspired by, Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.

In a movie about my life, the movie star who would play me would be: Kate McKinnon from SNL because of her impeccable comedic timing.

My advice for current students:  For current students, I would say to continue to be excited about college and keep looking for new opportunities every year. It is never too late to get in touch with a professor for research, to study abroad for a summer or a semester, or to join an extracurricular in a subject you have only recently become interested in.

My favorite experience in the Honors College:  My favorite experience in the Honors College has definitely been the Maymester class that I took called "Art and Culture in Japan.” We traveled to Japan for around two weeks and studied some of the most beautiful works of art and architecture in the world, including Todaiji, the Phoenix Hall, and the Fushimi-Inari Shrine. We also had the incredible opportunity to participate in art workshops, such as making our own washi paper and visiting a printmaking studio to carve our own wood to make unique prints. Since returning from this trip, I have been working on creating an art exhibition of all the work created by myself and my classmates to put on display for my senior thesis.

My favorite thing about the Honors College: The free printing! But I also enjoy getting to know the students and staff and hearing about the interesting things they are passionately working on.

My reason for choosing the SCHC: I chose to attend the South Carolina Honors College for a variety of reasons, but I would say the main factor is that the college was the best of both worlds for me. The Honors College is a small and prestigious college within a large state university that also functions as a research institution. This means that I can have small classes and close relationships with my professors and advisors, but I also have access to facilities and opportunities, such as study abroad and research, that come with attending a large school.
