South Carolina Honors College

Edgar Ramos Mendoza

Ask me about...biomedical engineering, intramural sports, Greek life and how to create a great community in your residence hall!

I'm a current senior from Florence, SC but was born in Mexico and moved to the US in 2012. Spanish is my native language, and you will notice that I have an accent. I am a biomedical engineering major and want to go into industry. Over the summer I got accepted into an accelerated path for the Master in Entrepreneurial Engineering and Innovation Technology offered by our Engineering and Business schools. I will be taking some of the graduate level classes before I even graduate! After graduating from the EE&IT Masters, I would like to get a job at a company helping develop medical devices to improve patient care and treatment. I plan on coming back to USC to get an MBA to understand the business side of the industry. I am a big fan of sports overall, but soccer is my favorite sport, and Barcelona is my favorite club. If you ever want to talk about any sport, I am your go-to guy.

My hobbies: Soccer (as mentioned multiple times above), golf, playing video games and watching sports on TV

Something new I’d like to learn: I would like to learn more about business and stock trading. Businesses fascinate me and I love watching Shark Tank because I learn many things by watching it.

Favorite study music: Classical music on piano or strings. Beethoven, Pachelbel, Mozart, Yiruma, Chopin or any other composer works. Any modern songs on acoustic even if they have no lyrics.

Song I could listen to non-stop: Hall of Fame- The Script ft. Will.I.Am

My motto in life: Always do the right thing, even when no one is looking. Always be kind and respectful.

Favorite movie: I have two favorite movies I could watch non-stop “50 first dates” and “A Knight’s Tale”. I laugh every time with both and there are my go to movies when there’s nothing worth watching on TV or Netflix.

My pet peeve: People walking/driving slow

My dream job: Soccer coach for Barcelona or sports analyst

My advice for prospective students: Don’t be afraid to ask questions! This is the perfect time to get most of your questions answered. If you don’t understand something about the Honors College, ask an ambassador. If you don’t understand something in class, ask your professor. If you don’t understand something about soccer, ask me! These years in college are where you will discover yourself and will become a better you that can offer a great deal to society, don’t let question and doubts stop you from doing so.

My advice for current students: Keep working hard and take advantage of all the opportunities that the Honors College offers. Time flies by and these few years will feel like a breeze, before you know it you will be entering your junior year feeling like you just moved in yesterday! I know I do.

My favorite thing about the Honors College: Everyone in the Honors College is so happy and ready to help you. We’re all here for a reason and you can learn so much from us. If you want to learn about a country, culture, topic, language, classes and many more things, I bet you will find someone in the Honors College who knows about it.

My reason for choosing the SCHC: I have learned that I’m a better student in small classes with an engaging environment. When I was applying to colleges, I searched for that environment and found that even though U of SC was such a big university, I was still able to get the small classes with very qualified professors through the Honors College.
