South Carolina Honors College

Christal Harvin

Ask me about... getting involved on campus, time management, jobs, internships, and having multiple majors!

I am a sophomore Public Relations and Sociology major from right here in Columbia, SC. I am also pursuing a minor in Leadership Studies and Leadership Distinction in Research and Professional & Civic Engagement! After I graduate, I plan to go into the public relations field, working to improve diversity and inclusion in the fashion, beauty, media, and/or consumer goods industries. I am a lover of all things food, beauty, and Beyoncé!

My advice for prospective students: Be yourself! Don’t stress yourself out trying to be the “perfect” applicant. Your application is just an opportunity for you to tell your story and why the SCHC should be a part of it. Be authentic, no matter how unconventional your interests may seem.

My advice for current students: Make connections! Our university is full of amazing faculty and staff members who have tons of knowledge and experience. Reach out to them! You never know how a simple email or conversation after class could result in a research or internship opportunity.

My favorite thing about the Honors College: It makes our large university much more personal. The SCHC does an amazing job of making sure that you have small class sizes that allow you to get to know your professors, opportunities to sit down and talk to your advisor, and even workshops where you can learn about careers, research, study abroad, etc. and connect with faculty knowledgeable about those areas.

My reason for choosing the SCHC: As one of the top students in my high school class, I was constantly encouraged to apply to the most prestigious institutions in the nation. Simply put, I’m a Southern girl, and I couldn’t imagine myself going off to a school that doesn’t serve BBQ or sweet tea. Coming to the SCHC, however, gave me the best of both worlds. Here, I am studying at a top-ranked honors college, where I am receiving an amazing education (and I didn’t have to sacrifice my beloved sweet tea.)

My hobbies: As Millennial as this may sound, my biggest hobby is honestly being on social media. As someone going into the PR field, staying active on social media is crucial for me to stay up-to-date on campaigns, trends, influencers, and controversies… and it’s pretty entertaining. I’m also really obsessed with watching cooking videos.

My motto in life: Mediocre is just as close to the bottom as it is to the top. Always push yourself to do better.

Something that makes me laugh: Any episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. If you can watch an entire episode of that show without laughing, I’m worried about you.

Something I’m proud of: I’ve gone on an all-expenses-paid trip to another state (Florida, California, and New York) every summer for the past 3 years because I was being honored for some type of special award.

Favorite TV Show: Would I even be a PR major if my favorite TV show wasn’t Scandal?

Skill I’d like to master: Speaking Spanish! During my freshman year of high school, I made a vow to myself to become fluent in Spanish and completed online Spanish lessons every single day for months but eventually stopped. This year, I reminded myself of this goal and started back with the lessons. Fingers crossed.

Songs I’ve completely memorized: The theme song to pretty much any early-2000s Disney Channel show.

My dream job: Chief Communications Officer of a Fortune 500 Company...

My secret: …but I would LOVE to be a food critic/judge on a Food Network TV show. Who would pass up getting paid to eat food?
