What drew you to the field of medicine?
Growing up, patterns have always been a place of comfort for me. Anytime we visited a bookstore, my parents would always find a puzzle book for me to conquer. When my grandfather was diagnosed, and later passed due to complications from COVID-19, I was suddenly faced with a pattern I could not solve. I found medicine to be the biggest puzzle of all, and one that I was determined to crack. Throughout high school, I shadowed multiple physicians and volunteered in a hospital to discover more medical patterns. I discovered patterns of health inequity in underserved areas to be the most pressing. I founded an organization that provided lung health education to the underserved youth in Metro Detroit. In addition, I was able to work on social justice initiatives to help alleviate the detrimental patterns in our communities. Being a physician will allow me to recognize patterns and discover new solutions in medicine to help my community and underserved areas.
What are your plans after attending medical school?
Through the field of medicine, I hope to continue serving my community and raising the quality of healthcare in underserved areas. Additionally, I am interested in creating healthcare policies that better serve communities and initiatives to allow for healthcare to be more accessible. I am keeping an open mind in terms of specialty, but I am currently leaning towards OB/GYN or Pulmonology. I look forward to using research and clinical experiences as a blueprint to reach my professional goals.
