Notes:
Biofilms are attached groups of bacteria that produce a protective polymer matrix. This provides bacteria with unique capabilities not observed in similar individual cells. This includes cell-cell communication; enhanced gene-exchange and resistance to antibiotics.Formal lectures will be presented by the instructor. Additionally, students will be expected to read articles and discuss the ideas presented. Specific interests of students re biofilms can be developed into discussions, as well.Biofilms are central to most human infections. They are form a large part of the (helpful) human microbiome. Finally, biofilm occur in all environments on Earth; most especially in extreme conditions where other life forms cannot survive; and perhaps even occur elsewhere.
