A 12-day comprehensive study abroad exploring letterpress typography, architecture, and drawing. Students experience letterpress design hands-on learning the art, mechanics, history, and engineering of letterpress, which dates back to the 15th century. Students will work with a dedicated contemporary master printer at the renowned tipoteca, a working type museum and letterpress archive in Treviso. In Venice students visit historic architectural landmarks and prominent contemporary galleries while practicing 1- and 2-point perspective, a method of drawing invented in Italy during the Renaissance. The course culminates in the legendary Venice Biennale Architettura, the most prestigious international architecture exhibition in the world, with the theme for 2023: The Laboratory of The Future where students will view and experience speculative and futuristic works of current contemporary architects first-hand. Students in this course keep an analog daily journal of drawings completing a series of visual prompts, culminating in a digital blog with written reflections and imagery. From the consequential feat of engineering of the printing press to historically significant frescos, oil paintings, and sculptures by Renaissance masters to cutting edge architectural designs by contemporary greats, this course celebrates the past while  imagining the future.
