Frequently Asked Questions:
What exactly is Flotilla? Freshman Flotilla is a chance for Honors College freshmen to enjoy a few hours of fun in the sun with their new classmates while kayaking down the beautiful Saluda River. Students meet in the Honors College Residence Hall to sign-in, turn in paperwork, and board the buses. They are then transported to the river put-in to receive kayaks and instructions. Next, it’s time for a guided kayak trip down the river, before returning to the Honors College Residence Hall.
Who can participate? This trip is reserved for Honors College freshmen and selected Honors Peer Mentors. No kayaking experience necessary! Participation is not mandatory, but we truly hope you will take advantage of the chance to explore the natural beauty of Columbia and make new friends.
How much does Flotilla cost? Flotilla is sponsored by the Honors College at no cost to you!
What should I wear? We recommend you wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting wet or muddy. Students often wear shorts and t-shirts over bathing suits. You may want to leave your favorite sneakers or sunglasses at home!
Can I drive myself? No, all participants must meet at the Honors College Residence Hall for check-in and ride the bus to and from the Saluda River.
What should I bring? Please bring the required paperwork and any other items for time in the sun and water (sunscreen, water bottle, hat, towel, bug spray, etc.). Large Ziploc bags will be provided at check-in, should students want to leave their phones, keys, and other important items with an Honors College staff member.
