South Carolina Honors College

Emily Greer

Ask me about… The Darla Moore School of Business, working both on and off-campus and getting involved!

I’m a junior majoring in Accounting from Rock Hill, SC. I hope to do the Accelerated Masters of Accountancy here at UofSC, which will allow me to graduate with both my bachelors and Masters degrees in four years (and a summer semester). After graduation, I will either attend law school to study international taxation or work for an accounting firm in their international tax division.

My advice for prospective students: Keep an open mind while looking at colleges. Getting in is only where college starts, the rest of the experience is based on what you get involved in and what you decide to do.

My advice for current students: Get to know our amazing Honors College staff! Working as a Student Assistant has allowed me to realize and appreciate just how much “behind the scenes” work goes into making the Honors College what it is.

My favorite thing about the Honors College: I love the “interesting” classes that fulfill Honors requirements. Some of my favorite courses in college have been these unique seminar courses, from learning how molecules change when food cooks in Chemistry of Food to debating legal cases in Law and Social Evolution. These courses allowed me to explore different areas that I otherwise never would have within my major.

My reason for choosing the SCHC: Growing up in South Carolina, I always wanted to eventually be a Gamecock, but I also wanted the small class sizes and tight knit community offered at smaller colleges. The Honors College made UofSC the perfect choice for me. The small class sizes allow me to connect with my peers and faculty, all while still getting to attend SEC sports and carry on my family’s tradition of attending UofSC.

My favorite things: My dogs, Star Wars, and listening to thunderstorms (when I can listen from inside).

My hobbies: I have two Labrador Retrievers — Harper and Elliott. I really enjoy taking them for walks around campus, specifically to their namesakes (Harper College and Elliott College) on the Horseshoe. I can also be found anywhere there’s free t-shirts on campus!

Something that makes me laugh: Friends, The Office, or Parks and Rec. I’m one of those people that can watch them over and over again and still find them hilarious.

Favorite study music: Movie and TV scores. I have a 3-hour Spotify playlist entirely of “background” music.

My strength: Being a planner. My planner is color coded and it helps me stay on top of my work and manage my time effectively.

My escape: Pawleys Island. My mom grew up there and my family goes back for vacation every year. Each morning, I take a sunrise walk down the beach and just enjoy the quiet.

Something I will always do: Have a Coke Zero in my backpack on the way to class. I’m very proud of not having a coffee addiction, but I have to get my caffeine fix somehow!

Something I will never do: Willingly watch a horror movie. I hate jump scares, even though I can always see them coming.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
