Just before Ed Gatzke had the chance to begin his modeling and simulation of biomedical systems class Wednesday morning, he was surprised with balloons and one of the University of South Carolina's most prestigious awards - the Garnet Apple Award for teaching innovation.
With a two-year $250,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health, Chang Liu is assembling a research team of four graduate and post-doc students to create and miniturize a test that can detect TB antigens in the blood using nanopore technology.
Ehsan Jabbarzadeh can see where the future of engineering will be, and it's exactly where his interests lie: the mesh point between science and business. Through the entrepreneurial engineering master's program he began, he hopes the CEC's students can learn this, too.

Congratulations to William Torres whose recent publication "Regional and temporal changes in left ventricular strain and stiffness in a porcine model of myocardial infarction" has been selected as a feature article by the APSselect September edition, showcasing some of the best recently published articles in physiologcial research. Will is a member of Drs. Shazly's and Spinale's research group.
Congratulations to Drs. Lessner, Eberth and Shazly for being awarded an NSF grant for their collaborative research investigating the mechanics of vascular remodeling.
BME is welcoming Assistant Professor Dr. Chang Liu to the Program! Dr. Liu received his PhD from Florida International University in 2013 and is most recently joining us from Arizona State University. His research interests are biosensor development and biomarker discovery using nanomaterials.
Congratulations to BME senior Ande (Lauren) Hesser for winning the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers Award! Ande has been accepted into the PhD program at the University of Chicago. Best of luck with your future studies!
BME is proud to honor its top graduate Eric Bidinger with the Outstanding Senior Award. Eric is headed to MUSC in Charleston, and is planning on becoming either an orthopedic surgeon or an emergency room physician.

Congratulations to USC BME alum Ryan Geiser, who has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship - the University of Cambridge's most prestigious scholarship for international postgraduate students! Ryan will pursue his PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK, investigating the folding and misfolding of proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative diseases.

Graduate student Merina Jahan has been awarded the very competitive GHC Scholarship to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) for Women in Computing conference in Orlando, Florida in October 2017. This is world’s largest gathering of women technologists and is produced by the Anita Borg Institute in partnership with ACM.

BMEN senior Elizabeth Moore has been awarded USC's Outstanding Senior award. After graduating she plans to attend the MD/PhD program at Vanderbilt University.
In addition to winning second place in this year's annual IBE meeting in Greenville, SC, with his research about the “Effect of Key Polyphenol Functional Groups on Oligomer Formation in Alzheimer’s Disease”, Ryan Geiser has also won first place for all poster presentations in Natural Sciences at the prestigious Stanford Research Conference, as well as second place for the afternoon poster presentations in Biomedical Sciences at USC's Discovery Day. Way to go!
BME senior Elizabeth Crummy was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. She plans to attend graduate school at the University of Washington, where she will study Neuroscience. We wish you all the best for the future!
