IGERT fellows are encouraged to participate in a 3-6 month research internship in a laboratory at one of our partner institutions in Asia.
These institutions are well known for their research excellence and have research activity that directly complements the three research thrusts of the IGERT program. Students have the opportunity to choose from a menu of possible research mentors and projects, which will complement and/or augment their chosen research efforts at USC.
Before traveling to their international site, IGERT students will complete an orientation program at USC, which will provide basic survival skills and soften the “cultural shock” the students are expected to experience upon arrival in Asia. Once in their internship, students will be integrated into their mentor’s research group and assisted in the transition to living abroad.
Once a week, the IGERT student, their host mentor, and their USC advisors will have a video conference call to discuss their latest results, findings and experiences. In addition to the individual research projects, the IGERT students will be involved in a range of other social and cultural activities to enrich their experience and facilitate collaboration and long-term relationships between the students and their hosts.
