Elena Barilla - Broadcast Journalism

By Maria Jutton, Dean's Communications Fellow

Elena Barilla is a fourth-year broadcast journalism student from Long Island, New York. Growing up near New York City, a major media market, Barilla knew she wanted to become a journalist. After visiting the University of South Carolina, she decided to attend college away from her home state and family to experience a different cultural environment.

At South Carolina, Barilla was attracted to the senior semester capstone experience for broadcast and print journalism students.

“You can’t really compare that experience to anything else,” she says. “I definitely have a lot of internships under my belt, but this is probably the ultimate internship experience that you could have because you’re given the most responsibility.”

Barilla has interned at NBC affiliates in Columbia and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Seacrest Studios in Charlotte. She’s also interned with CBS’s Inside Edition and ABC’s The View. Check out Barilla's portfolio»

Through her internships, Barilla has learned how media outlets operate on both local and national levels. She has also discovered that she’s interested in pursuing opportunities outside of New York after she graduates.

“It’s made me realize where my heart is, where my passions are,” she says. “I love my family, I’d love to go home to them after graduation, but I’ve also always wanted to be a journalist for my entire life.”
