Elena Barilla is a fourth-year broadcast journalism student from Long Island, New
York. Growing up near New York City, a major media market, Barilla knew she wanted
to become a journalist. After visiting the University of South Carolina, she decided
to attend college away from her home state and family to experience a different cultural
At South Carolina, Barilla was attracted to the senior semester capstone experience
for broadcast and print journalism students.
“You can’t really compare that experience to anything else,” she says. “I definitely
have a lot of internships under my belt, but this is probably the ultimate internship
experience that you could have because you’re given the most responsibility.”
Barilla has interned at NBC affiliates in Columbia and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina,
and Seacrest Studios in Charlotte. She’s also interned with CBS’s Inside Edition and ABC’s The View. Check out Barilla's portfolio»
Through her internships, Barilla has learned how media outlets operate on both local
and national levels. She has also discovered that she’s interested in pursuing opportunities
outside of New York after she graduates.
“It’s made me realize where my heart is, where my passions are,” she says. “I love
my family, I’d love to go home to them after graduation, but I’ve also always wanted
to be a journalist for my entire life.”
Maria Jutton is a fourth-year print journalism student and Dean's Communications
Fellow at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. She is especially passionate
about international communications and will pursue overseas work after she graduates
in May 2020.
