A cover letter is a great way to stand out as an applicant and convey your interest
to your prospective employer. We strongly recommend sending a cover letter when applying
for jobs and top-choice internships.
Purpose of a Cover Letter
- Ideally, your cover letter should convey your fit with the company.
- Print out a copy of your resume and the job description. Highlight what is common
between them. This should be the content of your cover letter.
- How does your experience align with the job description?
- For students with less experience, your cover letter should convey interest.
- Why are you interested in this company in particular? How do you align with their
mission, vision and goals?
- This is a great way to show off your ability to research the company!
Components of a Cover Letter
- Heading: should resemble heading of resume and references (which includes name, contact
information, email address, phone number)
- Name and address of Company Contact: should be Human Resources or Recruiter
- "Dear...", do not say "To whom it may concern." Take the time to research this person's
name. This shows your commitment to the job/internship search!
- Paragraph 1: How did you find this position? Did someone refer you to this position?
(Very short paragraph - no more than 2 sentences)
- Paragraphs 2 and 3: Convey fit or interest (6-7 sentences), use real examples to connect
your experience to the job description.
- Paragraph 4: Reiterate your interest and your contact information. (2 sentences or
