Prior to entering academia, Dr. Yingying Chen was Nairobi bureau chief for Xinhua News Agency.
Chen's research focus is on online information diffusion, dynamics of public attention in the hybrid media system, and computational social science methods. She received awards for her research from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and Advertising Research Foundation. She presented her paper at major conferences in the field of communication (ICA, AEJMC). Her work has been published in Journal of Adverting Research and Journal of Intercultural Communication Research.

Chen teaches Creative Strategy and Execution. She also taught Digital Analytics at Michigan State University. Her teaching philosophy is "Non scholae sed vitae" — we do not learn for school, but for life. She is passionate to inspire students to find insights and tell brand stories using digital trace data. She likes to connect her classes with real-life cases and experience. She also encourages students to be lifelong learners and keep up to date with the latest changes in technology, media and communication industry.
