Chemistry - Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (B.S.C.)*

Our B.S. Chemistry degree fulfills all of the requirements for a degree certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS), one of the largest and most respected professional scientific organizations in the world.  With this degree, you take specific academic research courses, and earn an ACS certification [pdf]  with your degree.

The major maps show all the program requirements.  This is a typical program of study and may differ from the actual program a student follows

 

 Year One

It is very important to take the pre-requisite courses like math and general chemistry starting in the first semester of the freshman year in order to prepare for upper level courses in the major.

Semester One
  • ENGL 101 Critical Reading and Composition

  • CHEM 111 General Chemistry I 
  • CHEM 111L General Chemistry I Lab
  • Foreign Language or other Carolina Core Requirement
  • UNIV 101 The Student in the University or Carolina Core Requirement

Semester Two
  • ENGL 102 Rhetoric and Composition
  • MATH 142 Calculus II
  • CHEM 112 General Chemistry II
  • CHEM 112L General Chemistry II Lab
  • PHYS 211 Essentials of Physics I
  • PHYS 211L Essentials of Physics I Lab
  • Foreign Language or other Carolina Core Requirement        

TOTAL HOURS FOR SEMESTER:  18 Hours

 Year Two

In the second year students move forward in the chemistry curriculum with upper level courses and complete the math and physics prerequisites.

Semester Three
  • MATH 241 Vector Calculus
  • CHEM 333 Organic Chemistry I
  • CHEM 333L Organic Chemistry I Lab 
  • PHYS 212 Essentials of Physics II
  • PHYS 212L Essentials of Physics II Lab
  • Foreign Language or other Carolina Core Requirement

Semester Four
  • CHEM 322 Analytical Chemistry
  • CHEM 322L Analytical Chemistry Lab
  • CHEM 334 Organic Chemistry II
  • CHEM 334L Organic Chemistry II Lab
  • MATH course above MATH 241 (242 recommended)
  • History
  • Carolina Core Requirement (only if needed to meet Core Requirements)

 Year Three

During the third year students are continuing in the chemistry curriculum and preparing to take graduate or pre-health profession entrance examinations.

Semester Five
  • CHEM 550 Biochemistry (cross-listed BIOL 541) or CHEM 555 Biochem./Mol. (cross-listed BIOL 545)
  • CHEM 541 or 542  Physical Chemistry 
  • CHEM 541L or 542L - Physical Chemistry Laboratory 
  • STAT 509 Statistics for Engineers or STAT 515 Statistical Methods I
  • Cognate or Minor Course or Approved Elective
  • Humanities or Fine Arts

Semester Six
  • CHEM 621 Instrumental Analysis
  • CHEM 621L Instrumental Analysis Lab

  • Cognate or Minor Course or Approved Elective

 Year Four

During the fourth year students are preparing for graduation and applying to graduate or pre-health profession programs. Students may also be preparing to enter the workforce where they can use the skills they have developed through the ACS certified Chemistry Major.
