Prof. Breen earned her PhD in 2010 and came to USC after a year as ESL faculty. Her dissertation explored the role that literature plays in the process of trauma recovery, looking at changing perceptions of memory and history since the Civil War in Spain. She has taught a variety of lower division Spanish and Portuguese courses as well as Portuguese for IMBAs, and she led the Spanish study abroad program to Costa Rica in 2014.
In her first semester, she won an Excellence in Teaching Award for Portuguese. Beyond writing nearly 200 grammar explanations and activities for her Portuguese courses, she has presented on language acquisition and processing and narrating trauma at national conferences. Locally, Prof. Breen works to promote her students, the Spanish and Portuguese language programs, and the university.
