Education: Margaret Bates is from Greensboro, North Carolina and received her B.A. in History and Religious Studies at the University of South Carolina where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society. Bates is currently pursuing a dual MA in Public History and Library and Information Science under the advisement of Dr. Nicole Maskiell. Her thesis research focuses on the education of enslaved Blacks by Presbyterian congregations in South Carolina. Bates completed her internship with Historic Columbia in August 2021, during which she created a Story Map of the early religious life of Columbia, SC. She also serves as the Public History Liaison for the Student Community for Archives, Libraries, and Museums at the University.
