Spanish has become the second most common language in the United States. Outside of
our country, you'll also find it spoken in 21 countries in Latin America, Spain, and
parts of Africa, making it a useful language for anyone interested in travel or international
business.
Why Study Spanish?
A major in Spanish will help you prepare for a wide variety of careers in education, politics,
foreign service, the helping professions, travel and tourism, and communication. A

Scholarships
Rewards undergraduate French and Spanish majors for academic achievement. Nominations
to be made by UofSC faculty no later than March 1 the semester of graduation.
Eligibility:
advanced Spanish major (senior or rising senior - minimum of 18 hours at the 300-level
and above completed or in progress).
Minimum GPA in Spanish of 3.5; minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
Awards are available to Spanish students in even-numbered years.
Frequency: Awards made once a year (March), depending on available funds.
Amount: Variable.
Term of Award: a single semester.
Application, upon nomination, to include:
Faculty nomination
Transcript (official or unofficial)
Two (2) recommendations from (preferably Spanish) faculty.
Awarded each year to one, two or three students majoring in foreign language who demonstrate:
A sincere desire to teach foreign languages as a career as evidenced by a statement
from the candidate and recommendations of teachers.
Clear excellence in the candidate’s academic record, particularly in the language
of study as evidenced by a transcript and vita.
Each candidate’s nomination dossier should include a vita, an up-to-date transcript,
a personal statement of career intention, and two letters of recommendation from faculty
familiar with the candidate’s work. The dossier needs to be submitted to the respective
Program Director by March 1st.
Scholarship recipients will be announced by April 15 of each year. The scholarships
are awarded as tuition remission for the following fall semester at UofSC-Columbia.

Sigma Delta Pi
Our program is home to Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honor society. If you're accepted
into the honor society you'll be eligible for awards scholarship and study abroad
stipends from the National Sigma Delta Pi office and you'll be able to wear the colors
of the honorary society at graduation.
Eligibility
Spanish major or minor with outstanding academic records
Must be at least a second semester sophomore (completed at least 45 credit hours total
– can include AP/IB credits).
Must have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA.
Must have a minimum 3.0 Spanish GPA.
Must be eligible to take at least 300 level courses AND have completed through at
least Spanish 302.
Must have completed or is currently enrolled in at least one course in Hispanic literature
or Hispanic Culture at the 300 level or higher with at least a B.
