Lena Tahmassian completed her PhD at Stanford University in 2017 and spent a year as Visiting Assistant Professor at Davidson College before coming to UofSC. She specializes in cultural studies of contemporary Spain, particularly through the lens of cinema, visual media, and social/countercultural movements. Her research explores how this cultural production helps shape or intervene in power relations, especially relating to nationalisms, globalization, historical memory, and gender. Her published works on Spanish democracy and Iberian cinema have appeared in venues such as the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies and Bulletin of Hispanic Studies. She is currently working on a book project on countercultural aesthetics in Spain’s urban and postindustrial centers during the transition to democracy (1975-1986). She has taught courses on the cinema, cultural history, and literatures of Spain.
