John M. Herr, Jr. Education: University of Virginia, BA and MA degrees in Biology; University of North Carolina, Ph.D in Botany; University of Delhi, India, postdoctoral appointment; Fulbright Fellowship. Positions: Washington and Lee University; Pfeiffer College; University of South Carolina retired, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, after 34 years of service, 1993. Teaching: Courses in Botany to include Plant Anatomy, Morphology, and Embryology. Research: Development of techniques in microscopy; flowering plant embryology; studies in the evolutionary origin of seeds and leaves. Service: Served on many University and College committees; author of the guidelines for organizing the USC Faculty Senate and later of the provision for a two-year term of office for the Senate Chair; fifth chair of the faculty senate; chair of the endowment committee for the A. C. Moore Herbarium and Garden; former president and author of the Constitution and Bylaws for the Association of Southeastern Biologists, the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society, the Appalachian Regional Microscopy Society, and the Thomas Cooper Society; author of the Constitution and Bylaws for the Society of Herbarium Curators; on journal editorial boards for Phytomorphology (India); Acta Biologica Cracoviensia, Botanica (Poland); Southeastern Naturalist (USA). Awards: Meritorious Teaching Award, Senior Research Award and Lifetime Service Award (Association of Southeastern Biologists); the Elizabeth Ann Bartholomew Lifetime Service Award (Southern Appalachian Botanical Society).
