Task Details

Sight-Reading a Melody - Choral

Students will demonstrate the ability to sight-read and perform an unfamiliar melody. Using a structured sight-reading process, they will silently review the melody, chant the rhythms using a rhythm system, and sing the melody.

By identifying how accurately they apply a rhythm reading system, demonstrate a supported tone, and accurately perform the melody, teachers can design lessons to further develop each student’s ability to sight-read and perform increasingly complex rhythmic and melodic notation.

Teachers should select either the mid or high indicator and a sight-reading melody appropriate for the students’ skill level. SCAAP has provided melodies at the simple, mildly complex, and moderately complex levels.

Please note that this task is currently being piloted by arts teachers around the state. The rubric, documents, and student work samples may change throughout the 26-27 school year.
