Discover UofSC to return as a virtual event for 2021

Organizers of the University of South Carolina’s signature showcase of research, scholarship, leadership and creativity are very excited to announce that we will be hosting Discover UofSC 2021 as a virtual event on Friday, April 23.

After the unfortunate cancellation of Discover UofSC 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, organizers began identifying resources to host the 2021 showcase safely online while maintaining the quality and vitality of the traditional in-person event. We are pleased to report that the 2021 virtual showcase will offer all of the components our presenters, reviewers and other participants have come to expect from Discover UofSC.

 

Poster Presentation Sessions

Discover UofSC 2021 posters will be created, presented and reviewed on the iPosterSessions virtual conference platform. iPosters created on this platform are highly customizable and can include video clips, audio recordings, photo galleries, graphics of all sizes, text, links and more. The easy-to-master, intuitive iPosterSessions platform will allow presenters in all disciplines to showcase their research, scholarly, leadership and creative projects using content that best suits the features of their work.

To help poster presenters prepare to make the most of the iPosterSessions platform, Discover UofSC organizers will offer two webinars in March, which will be made available on this website for viewing at presenters’ leisure. Details on those webinars will be announced in the coming weeks, and we will release additional support resources through the Discover UofSC website soon. Prospective presenters are welcome to browse a gallery of sample iPosters here.

More on virtual poster presentations:

  • Individual and group presentations will be allowed.
  • Poster presenters will be able to interact with reviewers via text chat (through iPosterSessions) or video chat (through MS Teams) during their presentation session (morning or afternoon session).
  • iPosters will be reviewed and scored, and awards will go to top scorers (undergraduate presenters may opt not to have their posters reviewed as in past years).
  • Poster presenters will have about four weeks to create, revise and finalize their iPosters before presenting at Discover UofSC on Friday, April 23. Invitations to register for iPosterSessions and get started will be sent to registered presenters in late March.

 

Three-Minute Thesis Sessions

Graduate student presenters will have the opportunity to take part in a three-minute thesis competition. All three-minute thesis presentations will be delivered virtually for a panel of reviewers.

 

Keynote and Introductory Speeches

A warm welcome from university leadership and a fascinating keynote speech are key features of every Discover UofSC event, and 2021 will be no different. When participants visit the event’s virtual landing page in the iPosterSessions platform, they will be greeted with recorded welcome remarks and a keynote presentation to kick off their Discover UofSC experience and revisit any time.

 

Outreach Exhibitors

Each year, Discover UofSC organizers invite faculty/staff-supported campus organizations that promote scholarship, research, creativity and/or leadership within the UofSC and Prisma Health communities to promote their organizations at the annual showcase event. Although we won’t be getting together in person this year, organizers will extend the invitation for these groups to create showcase pages, built on the iPosterSession platform, to be featured on a special Outreach Exhibition page featured prominently on the event site.

Exhibitors will have all the features and flexibility of an iPoster, including video, audio, photo galleries, live text messaging with participants and more, to showcase their organizations to the UofSC research community. Prospective exhibitors are welcome to browse a gallery of sample iPosters here. Support materials for iPoster presenters, including March webinars, will apply to exhibitors as well.

 

Registration Opens Wednesday, January 27

Presenter, reviewer and outreach exhibition registration for Discover UofSC 2021 will open on Wednesday, January 27, at noon. Because of the virtual format, Discover UofSC organizers will not seek event volunteers for Discover UofSC 2021 through online registration.
