A Message from President Bob Caslen

March 17, 2021

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

This morning, we watched with great sadness as the news of violent attacks on the Asian community in Georgia filled our newsfeeds. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen a troubling increase in the amount of hate crimes against people of Asian descent, and we acknowledge the pain, fear and anxiety felt by members of our Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

At the University of South Carolina, we stand in solidarity with our Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander students, faculty, and staff, and strongly condemn all acts of violence and hate, including racially motivated acts.

In closing, we affirm our commitment to ensuring a safe, inclusive and diverse community at UofSC – a community in which all members are supported, valued and celebrated. In alignment with the tenets of our Carolinian Creed, I strongly encourage you to actively demonstrate support and concern, discourage bigotry and respect others within our community. If you are aware of acts of hatred, discrimination or bias toward any member of the Gamecock community, we ask that you immediately report them. If you are in distress or experiencing difficulty, please visit our mental health support site or call UofSC Counseling & Psychiatry at 803-777-5223.
