Here are some of the work experiences students have in and outside of the classroom.

The Capstone Design Program: Pairs seniors with industry sponsors to solve challenging problems for their business. This year, four biomedical engineering seniors developed a mobile device app that can display blood oxygen levels and pulse on a smartphone or tablet.

Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences: Learning to care for our incredible coast requires a hands-on approach. That’s why, in addition to our lab facilities in Columbia, we study in our 17,500-acre living laboratory at the coast.

Institute for Mind and Brain: Unlocking the mysteries of the mind-brain connection is one of the great scientific challenges of the 21st century. South Carolina is poised to become a world leader in cognitive neuroscience research with the establishment of the Institute for Mind and Brain.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility: The NMR Core Facility is part of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. It is the only high-resolution NMR facility at South Carolina and researchers are welcomed from throughout the university. We also provide services to other local universities and industrial clients.

Energy Leadership Institute: Our Energy Leadership Institute is leading groundbreaking energy research across the state and region. The interdisciplinary research team covers the technical, economical and environmental aspects of energy production, distribution and utilization including wind, solar, nuclear, wave, coal, natural gas and fuel.

Backers and Hackers: Sponsored by the Entrepreneurship Club and the College of Engineering and Computing, students compete for the best mobile application and develop a strategy for bringing the app to market.

Catalysis for Renewable Fuels Center: Students at this center are focused on developing catalysts that allow fuels to be produced from renewable sources. The center also serves as a resource for recruiting activities in the Midlands of South Carolina for companies focused on renewable fuels and alternative energy.

Strategic Approaches to the Generation of Electricity: The SmartState Center for SAGE is developing a broad, cutting edge research portfolio focused on novel technologies to enhance the environmental performance of electricity production.
