Divisional Capital Projects

We plan, design and deliver capital projects for the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support across the USC Columbia campus creating spaces that evolve with and elevate the student experience.

With more than 50 projects underway at any time, our Construction and Renovation team is continuously shaping campus spaces. Explore highlights of our upcoming, current and completed work.

Upcoming Projects

The following approved projects are in the planning stage for a number of improvements on campus that will enhance the student experience and campus community. Scroll down to learn more about the exciting changes you can expect on the way.

 

Capstone

The iconic 18-story residence hall, built in 1967, is set to undergo a full renovation. The 185,000 square foot hall will receive upgrades to mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, roofing and interior finishes starting in summer 2028.

Strom Interior Renovation

Interior fitness space at the Wellness and Fitness Center will be expanded by infill of some double height spaces. Other spaces will be reconfigured for a new locker room, spin studio and food service areas, beginning in summer 2027.

Current Projects

Part of our commitment to operational excellence and enhancing campus life means constantly evolving campus to better your Carolina Experience. Our team is diligently working on these projects, which you can expect to see in the coming semesters.

Sumter Residential Development

Coming in the fall of 2028, the Sumter Street Development will add a new wing to the Honors Residence and see a new residence hall take the place of McBryde at the center of campus. Together, these buildings will add more than 1,000 beds to campus.

Woodrow Renovation

Re-opening in the fall of 2027 in the center of campus, Woodrow College will see a comprehensive renovation and update of the interior. Living spaces will convert to traditional-style, and the building's capacity will expand 70% to 173 student beds.

Strom Roof and Exterior Renovation

Anticipated in 2028, the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center will undergo an expansive roof replacement and receive upgrades to the building's columns, parapet and seals.

Completed Projects

Our work reflects a focus on advancing the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support and enhancing our campus offerings for Gamecocks past, present and future. We are proud to show off our recent successes, including the revitalized Thornwell Residence Hall completed in the fall of 2025. 

 

Thornwell

Re-opened for fall 2025, the renovation of the historic Thornwell Residence Hall included the completion of the new McCausland Scholarship House for Evans Scholars. The building now features suite-style living with 126 total beds.

Maxcy

The Maxcy Residence Hall received key upgrades that were completed in the summer of 2025. This project included renovating all 50 existing restrooms and the addition of new First-Generation Center and Living Learning Community to the building.

Strom Pool Upgrades

In 2025, the Wellness and Fitness Center pool was upgraded with a new whitecoat finish, zero-entry ramp, modern PoolPak HVAC system and enhanced elevator controls and capacity — delivering improved accessibility, efficiency and performance.

Health and Well-Being Interior Improvements

Multiple levels of the Center for Health and Well-Being were reimagined in 2025 — converting exam space into counseling offices to expand vital student mental health services, while enhancing student and staff areas for Healthy Carolina.
