Faculty Principal of International House at Maxcy College

The University of South Carolina announces the search for the Faculty Principal of International House at Maxcy, the University’s international living-learning environment designed to enhance, both academically and culturally, the university experience of its residents. 

This position is expected to be filled by a full-time tenured/tenure-track or professional track faculty member at the USC-Columbia campus with a starting date in Summer 2021. The position reports to both the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies and the Associate Vice President of Student Housing and Sustainability and serves at the pleasure of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

The International House at Maxcy is located in Maxcy College on the outer Horseshoe along Pendleton Street which houses 180 undergraduates from the United States and abroad. The community has two apartments for visiting scholars, a demonstration kitchen, a classroom, a film viewing room, and support offices.  The Faculty Principal of this community maintains an office and strong presences in the community but does not live in the community.  

The Faculty Principal provides the leadership and vision for the living-learning community and is expected to: act as the community’s chief academic administrator; promote intellectual exchange, leadership development, cultural fluency, and experiential learning; promote student engagement and success; promote exchange among faculty and students; and interact with the Director of Housing, Office of the Provost and other university officials. In addition, the Faculty Principal plays an important role in recruitment activities such as open houses, Admitted Students Days, meeting with prospective students and their parents, etc. 

Importantly, the Principal of the International House at Maxcy focusses on shaping responsible citizens through intercultural understanding and appreciation; fostering interaction among international and American students for cross cultural exchange; advancing students’ learning through facilitating/promoting interactions with faculty; promotes language learning; and community outreach.

The following attributes will be considered in choosing the Principal:

  • undergraduate teaching and scholarly record of distinction;
  • demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate education;
  • demonstrated international expertise;
  • an appreciation of students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse interests
  • foreign language expertise (preferred); and
  • administrative and organizational skills.

The Faculty Principal is a half-time position with a three-year appointment subject to renewal with agreement of all parties. As compensation, the Faculty Principal will receive an appropriate salary supplement and release from certain teaching duties. These opportunities and others will be negotiated with the Provost.

The search committee will begin to review files of candidates beginning April 30, 2021. The search will continue until the position is filled. The successful candidate would be expected to start on May 15, 2021.
