Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR)

The University of South Carolina, Columbia invites inquiries, applications, and nominations for the position of Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). The Faculty  Athletics Representative reports to the President of the University and works collaboratively with the Faculty Senate and the Department of Athletics. This position serves to represent the institution and the faculty in its relationship with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Southeastern Conference (SEC).

The Opportunity

The Department of Athletics represents over 500 student-athletes competing in 21 intercollegiate athletics programs. The University of South Carolina, Columbia is a Division I member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and is one of 14 institutions that make up the Southeastern Conference.

NCAA Definition of Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR)
NCAA BYLAWS 4.02.2 & 6.1.3 A faculty athletics representative is a member of an institution's faculty or administrative staff who is designated by the institution's president or chancellor or other appropriate entity to represent the institution and its faculty in the institution's relationships with the NCAA and its conference(s), if any. A member institution shall designate an individual to serve as faculty athletics representative. The individual shall be a member of the institution's faculty or an administrator who holds faculty rank and shall not hold an administrative or coaching position in the athletics department. Duties of the faculty athletics representative shall be determined by the member institution.

The search committee has selected five finalists to be advanced to President Pastides. These finalists are:

Dr. Deena Isom, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice
Dr. Jean Ellis, Department of Geography
Dr. Eva Monsma, Department of Physical Education


FAR Roles and Responsibilities

  • Serves on SEC and NCAA committees as appointed and attends SEC and NCAA meetings and conferences as necessary. Three mandatory meetings to conduct business of the SEC take place in December, March and May. In addition, attendance at two NCAA conferences, including the annual conference in January and the regional rules seminar in June are also encouraged. For orientation, the FAR-elect will attend the SEC FAR meeting in Destin, Florida the week of May 31, 2022.
  • Participates in the investigative process for any allegation of a major violation of NCAA or SEC regulations. As necessary, the FAR is involved in the investigative process for any alleged secondary violation of NCAA or SEC regulations. The FAR  receives and reviews copies of all violation reports which are submitted on behalf of the institution, as well as the semi-annual Summary of Secondary Violations.
  • Serves as a signing authority for all waivers of NCAA legislation submitted on behalf of the institution .
  • Certifies the academic eligibility of each student-athlete along with the Offices of Athletics Compliance, Student-Athlete Academic Services, Admissions, Registrar, and StudentAthlete Financial Aid and Scholarships.
  • Serves as a member of the Certification Committee and as a member of the Admissions Subcommittee of that group. The Committee and Subcommittee meet at least once in both the fall and spring semesters.
  • Serves as a member of the University Athletics Advisory Committee (UAAC) and meets monthly with this committee.
  • Serves as a member of the Presidential Admissions Committee and meets periodically in both the fall and spring semesters.
  • Formulates the institution's position on proposed SEC and NCAA legislation, along with the Compliance staff, Senior Woman Administrator, Director of Athletics, and President.
  • Chairs the panel that reviews appeals relative to student-athlete transfers.
  • Participates in and receives a copy of all audits of the Athletics Department's Compliance procedures.
  • Serves a prominent role in the institution's completion of the NCAA Athletics Certification process.
  • Conducts regular meetings with University officials relative to Athletics Department business. Such officials include but are not limited to the President, Provost, and Director of Athletics.
  • Attends bi-monthly meetings of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletics Department award ceremonies, team banquets, competitions, and other athletically-related events.

The Faculty Athletics Representative is appointed by the President of the University and serves a three-year term, beginning July 1, 2022. Applications and nominations are open to tenured faculty members who have a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, research, and service. The FAR will receive release from one course and $15,000 in research support annually.

The search advisory group will begin the review of applications on April 20, 2022, and will make a recommendation to the president by Monday, April 25. Nominations should include the complete name and title, as well as postal and email addresses and telephone numbers of the nominee.
