General Chemistry II
This course provides a continuation of the study of the fundamental principles and laws of chemistry. Topics include kinetics, equilibrium, ionic and redox equations, acid-base theory, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, introduction to nuclear and organic chemistry, and complex ions. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of chemical concepts as needed to pursue further study in chemistry and related professional fields. Given the length of the term, 3 weeks, this course covers a minimum of 2 chapters each week. There will be homework and quizzes required each week in addition to an exam testing the material covered. There will be one module for each chapter for a total of 7 modules. The 8th module will be the final exam review material and final exam.
Learning Objectives/Outcomes
Students will:
- Make both qualitative and quantitative predictions of the solubility of compounds.
- Predict the physical properties of dilute solutions.
- Predict the direction and extent of chemical reactions at various temperatures using equilibrium constants and thermodynamic data.
- Calculate pH of solutions of acids and bases and pH changes in acid–base reactions.
- Determine rate laws from kinetic data and vice versa. Calculate chemical reaction rates at different temperatures.
- Balance oxidation–reduction reactions and assess the number of electrons transferred.
- Interconvert voltages, spontaneity and thermodynamic quantities in electrochemical reactions.
