No, student organizations are not considered nonprofits nor allowed to be nonprofits. You can be affiliated with a nonprofit, but you are not a nonprofit yourselves.

Per university policy, student organizations are not considered entities of the university and cannot claim tax exempt status or information from the university at any time. Please also note that the University of South Carolina is not tax exempt from sales or use tax except as allowed in SECTION 12‑36‑2120 of the South Carolina Code of Laws.
 
If a student organization is interested in obtaining information for tax-related questions, the student organization can go online or directly contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Columbia Department.

University policy (STAF 3.10) prohibits registered student organizations from using "University of South Carolina" or any variation of the university's name in a manner that suggests the organization represents or acts on behalf of the university. Organizations may use terms such as "South Carolina," "Carolina," "Columbia," "Gamecock," or "Cocky" in their name. Organizations should also avoid using University of South Carolina logos or other trademarked images in their logo or branding.

Registering a new organization means that the organization hasn’t existed on campus before. Choose this route if you’re not sure.

Reactivating an organization means that the organization has existed on campus and is currently dormant.

Renewing an organization is the annual process that all active organizations complete to let us know the organization is still active.

No, chalking is not allowed on campus as per policy UNIV 6.00.

Student organizations can request an email for their organization. Students will still use their student email when accessing the 25Live website to request space on campus. Accounts will start with “so” for ‘student organization’ and then with an abbreviation of your organization’s name.

If you need access to your organization email or password, or if you would like to set one up, please complete this form.

1. Log in to 25 Live with your USC user name and password (same as Outlook and Wifi).
2. Look for the ‘Create an Event’ button in the middle of the screen. Fill out the web form completely and click 'save'.

Organization categories are identified when an organization registers with our office. If you do not believe that your category is correct or fits your organization, email our office at lsc@sc.edu and we can review it.

If you are a student leader for an organization and are not receiving our emails, there are several things that could be happening:

1. Your organization may be inactive. To check, search for your organization on Garnet Gate. If your organization does not appear, it is likely inactive and must complete the reactivation process before regaining access to organization resources. Learn more about establishing an organization.
2. You are not listed as an officer for the organization. Some messaging goes out to specific officers (ex. financial training opportunities may be sent to the President and Treasurer). Any current officer can add you to the organization and update your position.  Our office can also help update the roster.
3. Check your spam folder. It happens.
4. You are listed as an officer, but may have organization notifications disabled in Garnet Gate. To update your notification settings, log in to Garnet Gate, navigate to your account settings, and select "Notifications." Under "Send me informational emails from," ensure that "Campus and Organizations" is selected. If this is not selected, you may miss important communications from our office regarding your organization.
