Recruiting and Interviewing

Once applications and resumes start to roll in, the real challenge begins as you narrow your pool of candidates.

By properly screening applicants, conducting the interviewing process, and checking references, you will be able to separate good candidates from those who are truly the right fit for your team and reflect the university culture of diversity and inclusion.

Recruitment plans should include diversity recruitment sources [pdf]. Jobs posted on USC Jobs are automatically posted online in the Inside HigherEd publication. The university has special advertising rates with and CareerBuilder. Listservs of various organizations are another great source for you to use as well.

Review these tips to create a diverse recruitement plan.

Departments must obtain approval from the Talent Acquisition Office before releasing any advertisements to outside entities. Positions should be posted on USC Jobs before being sent out to other sources.

Using a diverse search committee or interview panel helps hiring managers ensure a good selection is made by having input from other professionals with knowledge of the university and the job.

A search committee is not required for the hiring process but is encouraged because of the benefits an interview team can offer.

Search committee members can be added to the posting in the PeopleAdmin system to allow members to review applicant documents as well as evaluate applicants based on evaluative criteria if desired.

If you are interested in using one of these resources, but aren't sure where to get started, please contact the Talent Acquisition Office at 803-777-3821 or refer to the Search Committee Quick Guide [pdf] and toolkit [pdf].

Each department has its own internal procedures for the approval of the selected candidate and you must follow them. Consider crafting a memorandum or completing a justification form [pdf] to present to the department head or manager as to why the candidate was chosen.

If you have specific questions or concerns that our team can help you address, please contact the Talent Acquisition Office by emailing or calling 803-777-3821.
