International Scholars

The University of South Carolina extends its reach well beyond our state lines and beyond our national borders to touch every corner of the globe.

Our global impact, in part, comes from the international scholars who join our faculty to conduct groundbreaking research or to serve as visiting faculty. It also comes from members of the university community who travel abroad to work or conduct research in other countries.

Coming to work for the university and possibly establishing temporary or permanent residency in the United States can be a complex and lengthy process. Fortunately, our Office for International Scholars (OIS) team is dedicated to managing the process properly throughout our eight campus university system.

If you are an incoming international faculty member or research scholar, please contact OIS to schedule an arrival appointment as soon as possible.

OIS services include:

Hosting and Hiring International Scholars

Hiring an international scholar is a common occurrence in the higher education environment; however, government regulations and rigid timelines can make the process complicated and time consuming. Learn how we help our university departments comply with and navigate these challenges.

Preparing to Enter the United States

For a foreign national who is joining the University of South Carolina as a faculty member or visiting scholar, preparing appropriate documentation for immigration purposes can feel like a full-time job. OIS works with the foreign national and the academic unit to obtain the U.S. immigration status appropriate to the anticipated activity at UofSC.

Representing the University of South Carolina Abroad

UofSC employees often represent the university on international research trips, presentations, consultations and other travel-abroad opportunities. Depending on the country you are traveling to, there are a variety of requirements for entry visa entry and other important travel information. Learn more about how to be well prepared for your journey.

Funding International Scholarly Activities

OIS serves as UofSC’s liaison for the Fulbright Scholar Program with the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars, the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the Fulbright Alumni Association. OIS also maintains a close relationship with the UofSC Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs for students and the South Carolina Fulbright Association.
