Five Core Pillars
Galen's core pillars are more than just academic imperatives—they serve as our foundation
that can serve as lifelong tools to be successful as a future healthcare provider.
You can expect all events and experiences in Galen to be centered around one or more
of these pillars.
Our five core pillars include:
-
Cultural Competence
Awareness of, and sensitivity to, social, cultural, and linguistic differences. A lifelong, learning-oriented approach to working with people from diverse cultural
backgrounds, and a recognition of power dynamics in health care (Tervalon & murray-Garcias,
1998).
-
Interprofessional Collaboration
Make connections between ideas and concepts across different disciplinary boundaries. Interprofessional training will prepare you for graduate and professional study,
and for careers in new and emerging fields.
-
Critical Communication
Knowing how to assess and effectively communicate information is an important skill
set. Effective communication experiences will prepare you for graduate and professional
study, for careers in new and emerging fields, and how to communicate to a broad range
of people and institutions.
-
Service
Cultivate empathy. Your acts of service can have a significant impact on people's lives and on organizations
within your community. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities.
-
Leadership
Model good citizenship. Serve as a positive example to your community on campus and beyond. Get involved
in student organizations and other leadership opportunities with Galen.
