Peer Leader Opportunities

There are a variety of organizations across campus that can provide you with leadership training and opportunities, but you can make an immediate impact on other students by becoming a peer leader.

Gateway Guides

Each year, the Gamecock Gateway program seeks 15-20 students to serve as the focus group for the Gamecock Gateway program as it continues to develop. These Gateway Guides also play an integral role in welcoming new Gamecock Gateway students during Gateway-specific Admissions events and serve as mentors to future Gamecock Gateway students.

  • Earn at least a 2.75 GPA at the conclusion of the fall semester
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate in a group and provide constructive criticism as a member of Gamecock Gateway's go-to focus group
  • Show appreciation and respect for students with different values and cultures
  • Uphold the tenets of the Carolinian Creed and the Midlands Technical College Honor Code


Gateway Giving Back

Gateway Giving Back is a community service-based group open to all current Gamecock Gateway students. Students plan one service-based event each month where participants either go into the community, or encourage peers to participate in a service-based project. Previous service projects include Jeans for Teens and volunteering at Boo at the Zoo at Riverbanks Zoo.

  • Be on the lookout for information at move in and during the first few weeks of the fall semester

Gateway Scholars

Students who achieve a 3.5 GPA or above during fall semester are recognized as Gateway Scholars at a reception at the start of the spring semester. Gateway Scholars are also connected to valuable USC resources and opportunities.

Orientation Leaders*

As an orientation leader, you will serve as a key example of the opportunity the Gamecock Gateway program provides. Your primary responsibility lies in the successful, positive transition of new students to the Gamecock Gateway program.

  • Good academic standing, with a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA)
  • Good financial and conduct standing with no outstanding conduct sanctions at USC or MTC
  • Understand and support the purpose of summer orientation and the mission of Gamecock Gateway
  • Demonstrate the ability to be reliable, responsible, confident, flexible and willing to help
  • Demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of team members, students, parents, and USC/MTC faculty and staff
  • Demonstrate a desire to positively motivate and educate new students about the opportunities found in the Gamecock Gateway pathway
  • Be available to attend all training sessions and orientation sessions assigned

*Housing accommodations do not accompany this position. Students taking summer courses are welcome to apply.


Peer Tutors

The Peer Tutoring program at the Student Success Center provides quality, course-specific academic support to USC undergraduate students at no cost. Peer tutors are undergraduate students who have excelled in the course they tutor and have been trained to facilitate discussions on course content, study skills and strong academic habits.

Resident Mentors

Resident Mentors (RM) are hired by University Housing, and develop interpersonal and leadership skills through daily, personal interactions with students. As an RM, your job is to maintain and continually improve the quality of the students' living experience in the residence halls and their overall college experience at USC.
