Gamecock Gateway Specific
Advising looks different for GG students. When you transfer to USC you begin to register for your own classes, but during GG, advisors at MTC campus will help you register and drop classes. You can access this by setting appointments or attending drop in advising events at Bates.

Expanded more below, Conduct represents the office of Conduct and Academic Integrity. As GG students, program manager Lydia Hill is copied on this discourse, she will forward it to your Midlands Tech emails, and if you have questions, contact Conduct at saosc@mailbox.sc.edu versus replying to Lydia. As a reminder, GG program expectations include students being in good standing with conduct. If a student does not complete their Conduct requirements, a hold will be placed on their registration for classes which can cause delays in completing your official transfer to USC.
Once a month, MTC advisors come to Bates House Lobby to provide advising in an informal setting. This allows for ease of access in case of extenuating circumstances getting in the way of setting an appointment.
Navigate serves as an advising software at USC, however GG students do not have access given their dual enrollment. Navigate is typically used for scheduling appointments and advisors utilize the site for saving/accessing academic data on students. GG USC team members use Navigate to schedule 1:1 tutoring appointments.
The bridge program agreement between Midlands Tech and USC, students attend classes at MTC campuses while enjoying the housing, dining, and community of USC!
LIFE scholarship is a typical aid that MTC students receive. You must have graduated form high school with a 3.0 on 4.0 scale to earn this as well as other requirements which can be seen here. In order to maintain this award, students must continue to earn a 3.0 in undergrad.

These are meetings meant to help students prepare for their transfer to USC. Students will discuss spring classes and calculate possible GPAs and how that may affect transferring as well as an opportunity to discuss other resources that would be helpful for student success.
A required meeting if a student wants to withdraw from the GG program. In this meeting, staff and students discuss students’ plans and next steps to ensure a swift exit and maximize refund (if applicable).
General USC Terms
Blackboard serves as the main application for class access at USC. Registered classes automatically populate and professors upload assignments, documents, and grades here. Special organizations may also be found here.
Located on the 5th floor of the Thomas Cooper Library, the Career Center provides students, alumni, and staff resources and events to improve job readiness, find employment, receive exploratory advising, and all in between via drop ins or 1:1 appointments.
Carolina Cards act as students' ID, used to track attendance, enter buildings, and purchase food from their meal plan. If you lose your card, you can purchase a replacement at the Carolina Card office in the basement of Russell House.
Carolina Cash is additional dollars added to student’s Carolina Card accounts, it is used to print at the library and can be used at dining halls. You can check your balances and make changes here.
All Gamecocks begin their college career with the same foundation, referred to as the Carolina Core. There are 10 components with a range of options of courses that fulfill these requirements. They are meant to increase communication, literacy, reasoning, multicultural understanding, and more.
This serves as a value statement for all Gamecocks, established in 1990. While not enforceable, its presence helps to remind students and staff of the expectations of behavior and aspires for a better community.
Cockstock serves as a yearly concert for Gamecocks, brought to you by Carolina Productions, with famous names coming to our campus. Students receive ticket offers and pit/GA access at a cheap rate. In the past we’ve had COIN, Quavo, T-Pain, Young Nudy, A$AP Ferg, and the list goes on!
Cocky is the beloved mascot of the University of South Carolina since 1980. You will often see him at special and sporting events. Those under the Cocky uniform are kept secret, and not revealed until graduation when they walk across the stage in their Cocky feet!
Another way to say Columbia! Shortened from the city name by the Postal Service, it inspired the name of the Soda City Market.
The Student Conduct and Academic Integrity office handles claims against students who violate the honor code or policy while being a student. This can be related to cheating, alcohol or drug possession, housing damage, and more. Students will get an email from the conduct office with instructions for a meeting to discuss the claim. Following that students will be found responsible or not responsible, and more information will come with next steps.
Navigate is an advising software that serves as a resource for advisors containing student information, notes, success markers, progression, and incorporates appointment scheduling.
Exploratory advisors can help answer a variety of questions about switching majors, exploring different major options, seeing how your prior coursework fits into your new major or figuring out how to change your major.
This event serves as the opener for a great first year at USC! With vendors, Cocky, fireworks, and more, it acts as a way for students to begin connecting to the USC community and celebrate the work it took to get here.
The Gamecock Pantry is our free resource for students and staff to receive basic needs items such as food, clothes, and toiletries. Participants must create an account with Pantry Soft and receive points each month to use. This is located in the Coliseum, suite 4000.
This is the complete student organization directory. The university has more than 550 organizations that focus on academics, sports, dance, games, careers and more. All you need is your USC username and password.
A restriction on the academic record limits a student’s ability to register for classes, receive their diploma or other actions until the hold is removed. These can be checked at my.sc.edu.
The historic buildings and grassy area in a horseshoe shape, located between Sumter, Greene, and Pendleton Street, act as a place where you can relax, study and hang with friends. At the end the horseshoe is one of the popular bus stops for local shuttles.
Required of every freshman student at USC, a meal plan consists of preloaded set meal swipes and “meal plan dollars” that can be used across USC dining spots.
This is the university’s additional security for logging into widely used sites like Blackboard and Outlook. This consists of an app called Duo downloaded to your phone and each time you need to confirm your identity, a notification will be sent to the user's phone. From that you will enter a number shown on your screen to log in. You can also choose a text code or phone call.
RAs oversee floors in residence halls enforcing policy, holding events, and being there for other support and needs. It is a full time position filled by fellow students, which you can look into here.
Informally known as Russell, it serves a center for campus dining and events, as well as housing the bookstore, mail center, a hair studio and many inclusive spaces.
"Sandstorm" is a song by Finnish DJ Darude played throughout key moments during South Carolina football games and continues to produce energy throughout the stadium.
The SAVIP office serves as a resource for students experiencing interpersonal violence of some kind. On their website you can find resources to reach out to advocates who assist in this type of issue as well as making a report if someone you know is experiencing interpersonal violence. Just to be clear this is not a police report, not all reports to the SAVIP office are escalated, and if you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services.

The rain or shine local market, Saturdays 9 am - 1 pm on Main Street! The market spans multiple blocks and brings the opportunity to shop local and pet lots of dogs.
The SDRC serves at the liaison office for accommodations at USC. With proof of documented disabilities, one may receive alternative testing, meal plan modifications, or housing accommodations. Refer to their website here.
One stop resource for student success, with multiple locations across campus and diverse services from tutoring to school supplies to money management and writing help and more. More about the SSC can be found here. The main location of the SSC is the Mezzanine (6th floor) of the Thomas Cooper Library.
- Supplemental Instructors (SIs): Tutors that have taken the class already, take the class again with students, taking notes, and hold three weekly sessions at various locations to teach the material.
- Peer Tutors: Tutors that facilitate drop in tutoring, as well as 1 on 1 tutoring appointments with students who may be struggling with course specific content they support.
- Peer Consultants (PCs): Peer leaders that cover 1 on 1 meetings with students in Success Consultations to discuss academic strategies and co-create a plan to maximize the student’s potential for success.
When you hear this, it means hold your hand high in a 'spur’ (thumb and pinky up). It's a way of being unified as Gamecocks and shows that we are ready to win!
The university library includes many offices as well as books. Here you will find the SSC, Career Center, Hollings Library where special exhibits are shown, Technology Center, and Starbucks. Just remember to bring your Carolina Card to enter!
The rivalry between Clemson and South Carolina dates back over a century! The idea for burning Clemson’s mascot was sparked after the 1902 rivalry football game. Today, it takes 50 engineering students more than 40 hours to construct a 30-foot tall tiger. Tiger Burn is a night for the entire Gamecock community to showcase its unrivaled pride.
Williams Brice holds our beloved Gamecock football. On game days, shuttles run back and forth from Greene St to take you to the grounds with a valid Carolina Card. Tailgating takes place on the Fairgrounds next to the stadium. At the game you’ll have a chance to see Sir Big Spur, Cocky, our Carolina band, and our Gamecocks!
