USC Announces Seven Fulbright US Student Grant Winners

For the 15th consecutive year, USC will be represented abroad by Fulbright US Student grantees conducting research, studying and serving as English Teaching Assistants. This year our seven Fulbright Finalists are Eric Bringley (declined), Gerad Gentry, Kelly Goldberg, Morgan Lundy, Anna Porter (declined), Jared Thompson and Matthew Wagner, while four USC students, Katee Driscoll, Lauren Hamm, Anais Parada and Amy Yanicak, have been named Alternates. These students are among the over 1,900 U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research, and provide expertise abroad for the 2016-2017 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement as well as record of service and demonstrated leadership in their respective fields. Since 1983, USC has had over 100 Fulbright student scholars in Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, conducting research, studying in graduate programs and teaching English in K-college settings.

UofSC Announces Critical Language Scholarship, Boren Scholarship and Fellowship Winners

USC will be well represented by students studying critical need languages abroad in the coming year. Graduating senior Grant Fleming will be studying Chinese with a Boren Scholarship, while graduate student Noella Binda Niati will be studying French and Wolof in Senegal with a Boren Fellowship as part of the African Flagship Language Initiative. Anna Witkin (Russian) and Tyler Muehl (Thai) were named Boren Alternates. This brings the total of USC Boren Scholarship and Fellowship winners to 45. In addition, three students will receive intensive language training this summer with the Critical Language Scholarship - Laura Tarbox (Russian), Joshua McTeer (Arabic) and Angela Seidler (Turkish). This brings USC's total of CLS award winners to 23 since the competition was established in 2006.

USC Announces NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Winners

One current USC student and four USC alumni have been awarded 2016 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships (GRF). Current student Elizabeth Crummy and alumni Tyler Hernandez, Stephen Parker Singleton, Mackenzie Sunday and Daniel Utter have all been named NSF GRF Fellows. Three other current students, senior Charlotte Eckmann and graduate students Joel Bostic and Allison Rice, and three alumnae, Kali Esancy, Casey Lindberg and Elizabeth Yankovsky, were selected for Honorable Mentions in this prestigious graduate fellowship competition.

Jory Fleming named 2016 Truman Scholar

Jory Fleming's relationship with the University of South Carolina started even before he was a full-time student here. While still in high school, he was taking classes at the university when he met Jean Ellis, an associate professor of geography.

USC A Top Producer in Nation for Hollings Scholars

Eight rising juniors at the University of South Carolina have been chosen as 2016 Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholars. This year's recipients, Christian Brown, Mary "Katie" Frame, Kayla Gardner, Olivia Harris, Rita Hjelm, Leon Tran, Sierra Wachala and Amaelia Zyck, bring the total number of USC Hollings Scholars to 42 over the 12 years of this national competition, with 17 won in the past two years alone. This makes the University one of the top Hollings Scholars producers over the past three years and second in the nation during the 2015-2016 academic year.

24th Consecutive Year USC Students Earn Goldwater Scholarship

For the twenty-fourth consecutive year, USC students have been named Goldwater Scholars. A total of 48 Goldwater Scholarships have been won by USC students since 1990. Of those, 47 Goldwater Scholars have been members of the South Carolina Honors College, and this year we have our first Capstone Scholar winner.

USC Student Awarded DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship

The Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs is thrilled to announce senior Riley Brady has been awarded the prestigious Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF). Approximately a dozen students are selected each year and the award provides up to 4 years of support that includes full tuition and fees, and a $36,000 annual stipend. The fellowship experience is guided by a comprehensive program of study that requires focused coursework in the areas of science/engineering, computer science and applied mathematics. It also includes a three-month practicum at one of 21 Department of Energy laboratories or sites across the country. Brady is the first USC student to win the DOE CSGF.

The Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs is pleased to announce that Jory Fleming and Haley Yaw have been named Truman Scholar Finalists. Highly competitive and prestigious, the $30,000 Truman Scholarship is awarded to approximately 60 juniors nationally for superior academic ability, a strong record of service and leadership and plans for careers in public service.

USC student awarded Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Eric Bringley, a senior in the South Carolina Honors College, has been named a Gates Cambridge Scholarship winner, one of the top international scholarships in the world, and will pursue a doctorate in chemical engineering at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

USC Student Named Gates-Cambridge Finalist

The Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs is excited to announce that Eric Bringley has been named a Gates Cambridge finalist. Established in October 2000 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the highly competitive and prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship funds the pursuit of a graduate degree at the University of Cambridge in the UK. Worldwide, 95 scholarships are awarded annually, with 40 of those going to American students. Recipients are selected on the basis of outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential, commitment to improving the lives of others and the fit between the applicant's qualifications and aspirations and the program at Cambridge for which they are applying. One of 100 American finalists selected, Bringley will interview in Seattle, WA on January 30th.

USC Student Awarded Department of Defense SMART Scholarship

The Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs is pleased to announce Vernon Pryor was awarded a 2015 Department of Defense SMART (Science Math and Research for Transformation) Scholarship. The SMART program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories. The scholarship provides Pryor with full tuition and fees, a living stipend, summer research internships, mentoring, and employment placement with the DoD after graduation. In 2015, 207 scholarships were awarded from over 1800 applications.

USC's National Fellowship Interns

At the University of South Carolina, you don't navigate the application and interview processes alone: national fellowship advisors, faculty and recipients of national awards support candidates in a number of ways. National Fellowship Interns are current USC students who are winners of Hollings, Rotary, Goldwater, Udall, NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, Boren and CLS awards, among others. This year, we are pleased to have our largest national fellowship intern group ever!

University Alumna awarded Rotary Global Grant for Study in Northern Ireland

University of South Carolina alumna, Catherine Glen, has been named as a recipient of the Rotary Global Grant to study at Queen's University Belfast with a focus on international childhood adversity. Glen is sponsored by the Capital Rotary Club in Columbia, South Carolina, which is in Rotary District 7770.
