Mainframe Decommission

The mainframe was retired on March 31, 2020.  Data stored using IMS, CMS, TSO, Content Manager and OnDemand on the mainframe was impacted by this retirement. 

The mainframe decommission project started with a long succession of significant re-implementation projects that had to be done to replace the functionality of the mainframe. The OneCarolina project work formally began in 2010 with the different system replacements being completed in the following years:

2013 - Student System to Ellucian Banner

2016 - Finance System to Peoplesoft Finance

2019 - HR/Payroll System to Peoplesoft HCM and Identity Management to Oracle Identity Manager (OIM)

The final phase of the project was the migration of the legacy Enterprise data to new platforms and providing access to this data as described below:

  • Content Manager Image Migration – The legacy images for HR/Payroll were migrated to Hyland OnBase and all other areas were migrated to Banner Document Management System (BDMS). 

  • OnDemand Report Migration – The legacy OnDemand reports were migrated to the current version of Content Manager OnDemand (CMOD) on a server platform.

  • Mainframe Enterprise Data Migration – The critical legacy mainframe databases and files were migrated to the Data Warehouse with the Cognos reporting tool available for data access.

Mainframe Decommission FAQs

The University of South Carolina used the mainframe computer for 40+ years.  Before the PC revolution, the mainframe computer was one of the only computing platforms available to the university community. At various times the mainframe was used for administrative, academic, research, and personal computing.

In recent years, the university technology investment moved away from the mainframe. It was no longer a cost-efficient platform to operate in terms of software licensing and staffing. The hardware and storage media were years beyond their supportable lifecycle.

The deadline for access to individual/departmental data was September 30, 2019. Access to all other University Enterprise data was turned off on March 31, 2020.

In conjunction with the mainframe decommission project, is no longer available effective March 31, 2020. PeopleSoft Employee Self Service is the new location for most of this information. Virtual access to paycheck stubs prior to April 1, 2019 is no longer available via VIP. See more information about this change below.

The last Past Paycheck displayed in VIP was March 31, 2019.  This paycheck along with the previous paychecks available in VIP were removed permanently from VIP on April 1, 2020.  If you need access to this information, please contact Payroll at 803-777-4227.  All paycheck information beginning April 1, 2019 is available through PeopleSoft HCM Employee Self Service. 

Upcoming paychecks are no longer available in VIP.

The Net Pay Projection is no longer available in VIP. However, PeopleSoft HCM has a Paycheck Modeler feature under the Payroll tile on Employee Self Service.

The Payroll Direct Deposit page is no longer be available in VIP. However, PeopleSoft HCM has a Direct Deposit feature under the Payroll tile on Employee Self Service.

PeopleSoft HCM has a Tax Withholding feature under the Payroll tile on Employee Self Service.

The Student Hire feature formally on VIP is available on PeopleSoft Student Hire Eforms. Additional information can be viewed under Training/Roles.  Supervisor Update is no longer available in VIP.

Education, contact or emergency information can be updated in PeopleSoft HCM Employee Self Service.

Supervisor information for FTE, Research Grant or Time-Limited Staff, Research Grant or Time-Limited Faculty and Exempt Temporary Staff may be updated through PeopleAdmin on the position description. For Faculty FTE, Adjunct Faculty and Temporary Staff, supervisor updates may be completed through the job change form in PeopleSoft.

To view your benefits enrollment information please access MyBenefits for state insurance information or Member Access for state retirement information. PeopleSoft Employee Self Service will display your benefit details effective April 1, 2019 but SC PEBA will remain the system of record for beneficiary designations.
