Course Offerings

2020 Revision holds that UofSC revisit university courses to increase focus on marginalized communities, allow courses about marginalized communities to fulfill coursework requirements and enhance coursework offering that explores intersection of major courses and topics of diversity.

We hold that the university revisit the Carolina Core and other degree requirements to include a variety of coursework options focused on marginalized communities, such as African American, LGBTQIA+, and Latinx-based offerings. This includes but is not limited to:

a) Allowing more courses about marginalized communities to fulfill the required course categories of U.S. History, English, Ethics and other Carolina Core requirements.

b) Implementing mandatory course requirements that focus on the intersectionality of the major course and topics of diversity. Example: Journalism 311: Minorities, Women and the Mass Media.

Strategies/Action Plan

  • Center for Teaching Excellence will offer eight grants of $2,500 each to faculty to develop courses that focus on diverse topics and historically marginalized communities this spring.
    • Timeline: deadlines for proposals on March 31 and May 15, 2021
  • The College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education through their associate dean’s for diversity and inclusion is supporting ongoing efforts to de-colonize unit level curriculum and add historically marginalized voices to areas of study across different departments.
  • A course that meets Carolina Core requirements and the founding document requirement entitled Freedom Papers: Principals of race and nation (AFAM 200) will be offered for the first time in Fall 2021.
  • Faculty Senate leadership states that there is interest in revising the Carolina Core and is committed to student engagement in this project.
    • Timeline: At least a two-year effort
    • Who is responsible: Involves multiple faculty senate committees, faculty groups, input from alumni and administrative leaders.
  • Office of the Registrar has a proposal to purchase CourseLeaf PATH, that will integrate with the Banner System in order to improve the course selection process for students and make easier the ability to search for available/offered courses as containing topics relative to race, gender, sexual orientation and intersectionality.
    • Timeline: Implement solution during Fall 2021 in time for Spring 2022 registration
    • Office of the President has allocated $61,000 in recurring funding and $39,000 in one-time funding for technology upgrades and implementation.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
