More about Kyle:

Kyle discovered his love of baking and pastries while spending time in the kitchen with his mother and siblings creating hand-decorated cookies and other delicious baked goods for various annual holidays. Kyle attended Keiser University in Sarasota, Florida, and obtained a degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. He’s had the opportunity to travel the country working for the Walt Disney Company, high-end resorts in the High Rockies of Colorado, and in business dining at Seattle’s Facebook campus.

Kyle has had original desserts featured at Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. He has won a “world’s best chocolate chip cookie” contest and is a Food Network competitor (Girl Scout Cookie Championship), champion (Holiday Wars season 2) and Judge (Buddy vs Duff season 3)!

Kyle moved to Chapin, South Carolina in order to be closer to family following the pandemic. He’s extremely excited to bring his passion for baking and pastry and begin the next step of his career with the UofSC as the Executive Pastry Chef.

What is your favorite memory associated with food?

My grandmother used to spend most of her day in the kitchen. She's from Kentucky, and I grew up on Southern classics. She'd start her day by preparing a big breakfast; my favorite was her biscuits and gravy! Following that she'd start working on lunch which commonly consisted of a fresh endive or dandelion salad and a heel of bread, and then dinner we'd be treated to all types of greens; collards, mustard, you name it! She'd prepare a wonderful meat and accompanied it with traditional southern sides like macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, cast iron corn bread, etc!

What advice do you have for anyone learning to cook for themselves?

Anybody can bake! You just have to understand that baking is a science, and though you can have fun with flavor profiles and decorations, you have to remember that recipe cards are your best friend! Accurate measurements and following the technique outlined in the recipe are keys to creating delicious desserts time after time.

What is a fun fact that the students should know about you?

I've driven across country with my dogs three times.

There's nothing better than a solitary road trip, and I think everyone should experience it at least once in their lives. It's just you (and perhaps your dogs!), good music/podcasts and the open road!
