More about George:
Chef George was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. He found his passion for food at a young age when he started assisting his mother and aunt in the kitchen on holidays with anything they would allow him to do. After graduating from high school, he started working in kitchens and honing his culinary talent through his experiences with various types of cuisine. At the age of 24, Chef George attended culinary school right here at the University of South Carolina in the McCutchen House. Upon graduation, one of his instructors believed in his talent and offered him a position as Head Chef at Za’s Pizza on Devine Street. He lead their kitchen successfully for almost 4 years before deciding to take his talents elsewhere. His search for a new experience and the opportunity to showcase his culinary expertise lead him back to UofSC. Currently, he is the Executive Chef at Russell House.
What is your favorite memory associated with food?
When I would to my aunt's house in the summers when I was young, like 7 years old, and would help her with dinner. I would want to chop "fast." She never cared how big of a mess I made. Vegetables used to fly everywhere, drastically uneven cuts, and she would just laugh and tell me not to chop my finger off.
What advice do you have for anyone learning to cook for themselves?
Experiment, don't be afraid to try new things and make something out of your comfort level. At the end of the day it's just food.
What is a fun fact that the students should know about you?
I love salt water and deep sea fishing.
