Oktoberbest: A Symposium On Teaching

Friday, October 21, 2022 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Center for Teaching Excellence is pleased to announce that the 13th Annual Oktoberbest: A Symposium on Teaching  will be Friday, October 21, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the University Conference Center. At Oktoberbest you'll hear innovative teaching ideas and best practices implemented by your colleagues at UofSC. Mark your calendar to attend this teaching symposium featuring engaging and informative presentations on innovative approaches to teaching, assessments, course design, creative student learning opportunities, and successful implementation of new strategies and best practices. 

All UofSC faculty, instructors and graduate teaching assistants are invited to attend this free one-day symposium focused on sharing best practices in teaching. Oktoberbest is free to all who teach or support teaching at UofSC, but is not open to the general public.

Door Prizes

Oktoberbest attendees who have pre-registered will be eligible for a door prize drawing if they attend the keynote address and at least two breakout sessions. Recipients must be present to receive the prize selected for them.

Call for Proposals

Share your passion for teaching and innovative approaches that improve the quality of student learning experiences. We are seeking engaging and informative presentations on best instructional practices, effective teaching and learning experiences, and/or innovative assessment methods that speak to academic quality as a driver of student success. Submit an Oktoberbest Proposal 

Keynote Speaker

Brandy Bryson, Ph.D., M.S.W.  runs Inclusive Excellence Innovations, LLC. Dr. Bryson is a Professor of Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian State University. She is also the Director of Inclusive Excellence in AppState’s faculty professional development center where she leads a team of 60 equity and inclusion faculty and staff on Inclusive Excellence efforts. Dr. Bryson teaches undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level courses that prepare educators and educational leaders to advance diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in teaching and learning, scholarship, and leadership. As a national consultant, she works with a variety of institutions, organizations, and companies across the country, coaching senior leaders on leading diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and facilitating workshops with people in a variety of roles.

For the last decade, she has created curriculum and delivered DEI presentations and leadership coaching on topics such as: the connection between DEI and academic excellence; growth mindset and diversity; the Big 8 Identities; culturally relevant decision making for leaders; sustained and intergroup dialogue; strategies for allyship; trauma-informed practice; developing inclusive cultures; and many more topics at a variety of institutions and organizations. Dr. Bryson is a University of South Carolina alum where she received her Ph.D. in Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education.
