CTE Teaching Grants

Application Deadline Has Passed

Purpose

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) invites full-time faculty to submit proposals for CTE Teaching Grants.  The goal of these grants is to invest in the creation of exemplary, highly engaging courses, offered either in an online, blended, or traditional format.  Applications can be for the revision of existing courses or to convert existing courses to online/blended delivery.  Awardees will receive funding support and instructional design assistance, including pedagogy and technology support.

Currently, we are funding both Innovative Pedagogy and Online/Blended Learning grants. All projects must incorporate active learning strategies into the course revision or course development.

Grant Options and Project Examples

Innovative Pedagogy

The Innovative Pedagogy grant is offered to support the revision of a traditional course.

Project Examples:

  • Integrate advanced active learning pedagogy(ies) into existing traditional format course
  • Incorporate flipped learning into a traditional course
  • Incorporate new technologies into an existing traditional course
  • Implement strategies to help first generation college students succeed
  • Convert course to hybrid format (50% or more face-to-face / 49% or less online)

Online/Blended Learning

The Online/Blended Learning grant is intended to support the development or revision of an online/blended course.

Project Examples:

  • Convert a traditional course to blended or online delivery
  • Completely revise an existing online course into the latest Blackboard course format
  • Incorporate more advanced active learning strategies into an existing online course

Eligible Faculty

  • Any full-time faculty member at USC Columbia or the Palmetto Campuses (Columbia, Lancaster, Salkehatchie, Sumter, and Union) is eligible to apply.
  • Faculty may receive funding for only one course per grant cycle. Prior recipients of a teaching pedagogy grant through CTE must have completed the prior project(s) and submitted final report(s) to be eligible to apply for this grant.
  • Teach the proposed course or implement the funded project by Fall 2021.
  • Participate with fellow grant participants and CTE staff in a kickoff meeting to share ideas, resources, and discuss best practices. These meetings will occur on the Columbia campus.
  • Meet with CTE staff to discuss and outline proposed project development and implementation.
  • Consult with CTE staff throughout the project development process to ensure that materials developed meet university guidelines for design quality and ADA accessibility.
  • Create content in Blackboard Ultra Course View, as applicable.
  • Submit to present project outcomes at a CTE workshop, Oktoberbest or Educational Technology Showcase.
  • Submit a final report no later than January 31, 2022.

The number of awards will be contingent upon availability of resources, the number and quality of funded applications received and approved, as well as the amount requested and allocated per application. The review committee will submit a ranked list of proposals recommended for funding. There may be changes in funding amounts based on resources and justifications.

Funding Amounts

  • $1,000: Incorporate a series of modules or lessons into existing course
  • $2,000: Complete course revision or development

To apply, complete the CTE Teaching Grant Online Application and submit Department Support Form [pdf], current course syllabus, budget, and a current resume/CV.

Department Support Form

Please include confirmation from your department chair, program director, or dean supporting efforts to offer your funded course within the next 2 years, either through online or face-to-face delivery. Submit a signed Department Support Form. (Digital signatures are accepted.) If the proposed learning content is for a unit outside of your academic department, you must obtain endorsement from that unit’s program director.

Additional Funding Support

If this project proposal is receiving funding support from other sources, please let us know. If you received funding from CTE on any previous project, please provide your final report and/or a project status brief.

Budgeting

  • Provide a detailed Budget with Justification Narrative [docx] for total project costs, which clearly justifies each cost, consistent with university policies. Please review the Budget Justification Checklist for narrative guidance. View the Budget Primer [pdf] for more information and allowable expenses.
  • To facilitate funds transfers for those who receive an award, we request that you provide your departmental A-fund number in advance. Please request this from your budget manager.

Proposal Narrative

The proposal should include the following information and be concise (maximum 1,250 words):

  1. The Course: Describe the course that you wish to revise or develop. Describe what it is you are currently doing and what you wish to revise or develop. Describe your student population.
  2. Goals: Describe the goal(s) for developing or revising the course. What is the purpose? What new assessment styles, pedagogical theories/models, active learning strategies, instructional technologies, or innovative techniques will be incorporated to enhance student learning?
