Michelle Hardee is the Program Manager for all graduate student teaching assistant training at the University.  She is responsible for developing the CTE’s Graduate Teaching Assistant / Instructional Assistant (GTA/IA) orientation trainings and professional development programming, teaching the GRAD 701 Teaching Assistant Development course required of all new GTA/IAs, and helping students progress through the Preparing Future Faculty Program. She regularly coordinates with the Graduate School and other university academic partners on graduate student professional development workshops and events.  Her work focuses on developing effective and timely programming to address critical pedagogical and professional development skills necessary for any career pathway.  A staunch advocate of graduate students, she serves as a mentor and consultant for graduate students on an array of graduate student-related issues.

Throughout her 30-year teaching career, Hardee has been actively involved in marine science education and teacher training.  Receiving her Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of South Carolina, she teaches the Honors section of the Marine Science Program’s Oceans and Society course every semester, and in 2023 she was awarded the South Carolina Honors College 2023 Outstanding Faculty Award in this role.  She is an active member of the Professional and Organizational Developers (POD) Network, which is the international professional group for educational developers, and the National Academy of Geoscience Teachers.  Outside of her professional role, Hardee enjoys beachcombing, jewelry-making, and spending time hiking and walking with her dog, Lola.
